Walking from Main Beach along Clarkes Beach to the Pass, up the boat ramp and pick up the headland walk which winds around to Wategos Beach. Walk up Wategos Beach to the end and continue up the walking track to the lighthouse enjoying the spectacular views and dolphins in the waters below. Take a tour of the tower and then continue the walk down the hill on the other side and pick up the grassy track, pass the hang gliders doing their big jump and continue on through rainforest onto Lee Lane across the road at the Captain Cook carpark, down the stairs and turn left on the beach and walk back towards Byron Bay. The walk takes 2 hours so take your swimmers, sunscreen, lunch and refreshments and make a day of it. Be sure to take your camera for fantastic pictures to take home. Main Beach This is the main beach directly in front of the town of Byron Bay dominated by the Surf Club and is patrolled by Surf Lifesavers in summer. Swim between the flags. You can snorkel out to the Tassie 11, a wreck off the coast. People travel from around the world to enjoy the crystal clear waters, stunning beach surrounded by the beauty of the bay and the subtropical rainforest and views of Mt Warning and Border Ranges in the distance. Electric barbeques and a large grassy area for great picnics or just lying around relaxing and talking to friends old and new.
North facing and idyllic most of the year. Families love this beach. Learn to surf activities. Patrolled in the summer months. Ideal for windsurfing, bodyboarding and paragliding. Look for humpback whales during winter.
Famous globally with surfboard riders, ranked in the top 15 best surf beaches in Australia. The Pass is a gap between Fisherman's Lookout and the headland. Daily snorkelling and dive tour boats and whale watching (in season) boats leave from here. Wonderful picnic area under the trees. Barbeques.
Popular surfing beach for the long boarder, a popular swimming beach. Free electric barbeques and picnic area. Northerly swells make Wategos's Beach ideal for Malibu's. Access via Lighthouse Road and turn left into Brooke Drive. Free electric barbeques and picnic tables.
Little Wategos Beach
Is a quiet and secluded sheltered north facing beach, a lovely sheltered spot for sunbathing, swimming and rock fishing. It is overlooked by the lighthouse and most easterly point of the Australian mainland. Access is either from Wategos Beach at low tide or by the Cape Byron Walking track situated at the eastern end of Marina Parade. Inaccessible by car.
Tucked under the south side of Cape Byron on the northern end of Tallow Beach, popular local surfing spot and a good place to watch hang-gliders swooping from their launching pad above. Sheltered from northerly winds. Surf can be subject to strong rips. National Parks fee of $6 to park your car.
Runs from Cosy Corner to Broken Head. Be careful as the surf can be rough. Access Tallow Beach from Alcorn Street Suffolk Park or from Cosy Corner. Good beach fishing.
The Wreck is a surf spot located just north of the rock wall approximately 30 meters off the shore of Belongil Beach (at the town end), and approximately 60 meters from the Main Beach Car Park. It is a great place to explore with a mask and snorkel when the sea is calm. The Wreck is named for the remains of the ship SS Wollongbar lodged just offshore. The ship lost its tie to the old Byron Bay Pier during a cyclone in 1922 and sank. The most northern end designated as 'clothing optional.'
National Park - www.tropicalnsw.com.au/nationalparks/warning.html world Heritage listed Mount Warning (Wollumbin) is the remnant central plug of an ancient volcano. Summit Track After a final rock scramble the track emerges to 360 degree views reaching every distant horizon. Twenty million years ago the height of the volcano was twice the present height of Mount Warning. This volcano was formed by massive outpourings of lava, layer after layer, over a landscape that stretched from Mt. Tamborine in the north to Lismore in the south. Duration: 4-5 hr return. Degree of difficulty: Strenuous. Track condition: Steep and rocky in parts. Winter warning: Not advisable to undertake the walk after 2 pm in winter, as darkness on the return can lead to people becoming lost.
Cape Byron State Conservation Area
The Cape Byron Lighthouse has stood on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland for a century. The rugged headland, surrounded by sheltered rainforest gullies and subtropical waters, is a great spot for watching turtles, dolphins and humpback whales on their annual migration. The magnificent cliff top walking track winds its way through diverse plant communities, offering panoramic views of the ocean and north coast hinterland. Treat yourself at the top with a drink or snack at the Cape Cafe. You can tour Cape Byron Lighthouse (phone 6685 5955 for bookings).
Broken Head Nature Reserve
Encompasses superb headlands with steep rainforest clad slopes, sweeping down to secluded beaches. A walking track from the Broken Head Caravan Park follows a dramatic cliff-top track. This very popular walking track provides unsurpassed views seawards. Walking back in the opposite direction towards Byron Bay follow the outlet and find a lovely natural tea tree lake. Popular beach with large picnic and barbeque areas. Broken Head beach is patrolled at Christmas and Easter.
Nightcap National Park
Minyon Falls with a drop of 104metres can be spectacular especially after heavy rain. Protestors Falls This easy walk winds its way through Bangalow Palms to the base of Protesters Falls at Terania Creek picnic area. Swimming is not permitted in the area as it is home to the endangered Fleay's barred frog. Minyon Loop Beginning at either Minyon Grass or Minyon Falls picnic area, this walk takes you through changing vegetation to the base of the falls and along the escarpment edge. If you want to walk only to the base of Minyon Falls, the walk begins at Minyon Grass and is a 4 kilometre return walk taking around 2 hours. Both walks have steep climbs out of the valley floor.
Cape Byron Marine Park
Extends from Brunswick Heads in the north to Lennox Head in the south. It includes the seabed and extends seaward from the mean high water mark to the 3 nautical mile limit of state waters. The tidal waters of the Brunswick River and its tributaries as well as Belongil and Tallow creeks are also within the marine park. Local marine habitats include exposed and sheltered sandy beaches, rocky shores, rocky reefs, submerged pinnacles, small rocky islands, coral communities, riverine estuaries, coastal creeks and lakes, and sandy seabed habitats. Marine life includes many species of dolphins, fish, seabirds and marine plants along with threatened species such as little terns, grey nurse sharks and sea turtles.
